A traditional wedding, often called Bahaghara, is a series of meaningful rituals that bring two families together over several days.

Nirbandha — the engagement

The families formally agree to the marriage. Traditionally, the fathers of the bride and groom exchange betel nuts as a promise, and the wedding date is fixed.

Mangana and haldi

Before the wedding, turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom in their homes by married women of the family, followed by a ritual bath.

Barajatri — the groom’s procession

The groom arrives with his family and friends and is welcomed warmly by the bride’s family.

Kanyadaan and Hatha Ghanti

The bride’s father gives her hand in marriage, and the couple’s hands are joined in a sacred bond.

Saptapadi

The couple takes seven steps together, each step representing a promise to one another.

Chauthi

Held on the fourth day, Chauthi marks the beginning of married life and completes the wedding ceremonies.

Rituals vary between regions and communities in Odisha — always follow your family priest’s guidance.
