Guna milan, or Ashtakoota matching, compares the birth stars (nakshatras) of two people across eight areas. Each area carries points, adding up to a maximum of 36.
The eight kootas
| Koota | Points | What it looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and outlook |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Health and well-being |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental friendship |
| Gana | 6 | Nature and behaviour |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Family welfare and prosperity |
| Nadi | 8 | Health of future generations |
How to read the score
- Below 18: traditionally considered not recommended
- 18–24: an acceptable match
- 25–32: a good match
- Above 32: an excellent match
A high score is encouraging, but it is not the whole story. Astrologers also look at doshas, planetary positions and the full birth chart.
Why accurate birth details matter
Guna milan depends on the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. A difference of even an hour in birth time can change the result, so use details from a birth certificate where possible.
Compatibility is built as much as it is matched.
